| Pt Reyes National Seashore, Drakes BayPhoto gallery and journals of the sailing voyages of Ketch 22 in California waters Drakes Bay is about 30 miles to the north and to the west of the entrance to San Francisco Bay. It is a key component of the Point Reyes National Seashore and is pristine in all ways. Over the years spent sailing in and around San Francisco Bay, I have made several voyages under different conditions to Drakes Bay. It can be a challenging sail, seemingly always cold, and an even more challenging anchorage. It is not unusual to see 20 to 30 knots of wind blowing right through the anchorage, which makes for awkward sleeping at night, as the anchor chain rattles and the cleats groan under the additional wind driven weight, not to even mention the howling in the rigging. I'm guessing that Pierre will remember the trip when we just sat down for a glass of wine after dropping the hook. The typical 20 to 25 knots howling across the water, when suddenly a horrible racheting noise. Both realizing what it was seemingly simultaneously, we jumped up, clambered out the hatch and ran to the bow, where we had forgotten to secure the anchor chain, and it was racheting it's way through the windlass gipsy. Yikes! That got our attention. It was good sandy holding though, in about 20 feet of depth and I have never had any dragging issues with the Ketch 22's 50 pound Bruce anchor and all chain rode.
