Ketch 22 Splash Down

Arriving in Ft Lauderdale from Golfito Costa Rica

Photos and text of the sailing voyages of Ketch 22

Sailors Myth # 6: Heavy displacement is safe.

Myth Buster: Heavy is also slow, which can cause problems of a different sort.

After putting Ketch safely aboard the Federal Patroller, a cargo ship, Naty and I flew to Ft. Lauderdale to await the arrival.   Delay followed delay, but eventually arrival day came, and we were ferried out to take command.   We refueled, did some provisioning, and headed north on the ICW, something I've wanted to do for years.   It was everything I'd expected, and we ended going all the way to Brunswick Georgia, about 400 miles north, where I left her (Ketch 22, not Naty) for the season and we (Naty, not Ketch 22) flew back to California.  but not before we ran into some  interesting characters

Ft Lauderdale Florida

Ft Lauderdale is widely known as a college "winter break" town, but it's much more than that. Pt. Everglades is a major seaport, and that's where Ketch 22 was delivered to us. The ICW through Ft. Lauderdale contains one of the most ostentatious displays of boats and houses that I've ever seen.

Lauderdale Arrival The federal Patroller with yachts on deck.

Lauderdale Mansion Is that a house or a hotel?

And another.

And another.

Many bridges to cross.

Looking the other way.

Lauderdale Pelicans waiting for fish.

You gotta be kidding.

There's more.

Further north, the yards get bigger.

This one has room for trees.

The bridges go up/down on the clock.

Wait for me!

Balmy in March, but cold compared to Costa Rica.

This one has character.

Oh Naty.

The ICW isn't all work.

The Melbourne causeway.

That's not a shark Julie Modrak!

One of many lighthouses.

Lots of manatees too.

NASA Shuttle Assembly Building.

Orangutans in Florida?

You are never far from a sand bar.

There's a bar upstairs.

The lure is as big as the fish!

The good life on the ICW.

The harbormaster let us use his truck.

Where Virgin profits end up.

It used to be green.

Never far from a reef...

Windy and cold in St. Augustine.

Still working on the Bridge of Lions.

Cousins in St. Augustine.

Spanish moss in Brunswick.

The Brunswick bridge.

And that pretty much closes out the 3 weeks in Florida.   We flew to San Jose (California), departing from Jacksonville after making arrangements to put Ketch 22 on the hard, where she stayed until December of 2009.
